  Busing

On the road to nowhere
"If one were to look for a likely cause of the separation of the public and its schools, . . . then it would seem advisable to consider this historic trend toward larger schools and districts and the accompanying mass transportation of children out of their neighborhoods and communities to remotely located institutions."
--From An Agenda for Studying Rural School Busing, by Craig B. Howley and Charles R. Smith
Millions of students are bused billions of miles each year in the United States. In general, we know more about the effect this has on the buses than about the impact it may have on the lives of the children and their families. The Rural Trust has encouraged and supported new research on the human impacts of busing.
