Facilities
Buildings Can Serve the Whole Community
School Facilities: Resources and Connections

The Rural Trust works with many small rural towns and counties in which the school remains the center of the community. In many more communities, however, those neighborhood schools were closed and consolidated facilities built elsewhere in the misguided belief that larger schools would educate students more effectively at a lower cost. Even where the schools remain vitally linked to their surrounding communities, there is often insufficient funding to maintain or renovate them and money for new construction is still linked to consolidation.

The Rural School and Community Trust recognizes the challenge and the promise we face in creating facilities that serve schools and communities. To meet that challenge we have started a network of people working to improve school-community facilities, to increase community participation in the facilities design process, and to expand the purposes these public resources can serve. We invite you to join this network and hope that you will find the resources listed below useful.
