AASA, founded in 1865, is the professional organization for over 16,500 educational leaders across North America and in many other countries. The four major focus areas for AASA are: Improving the condition of children and youth, preparing schools and school systems for the 21st century, connecting schools and communities, and enhancing the quality and effectiveness of school leaders. The organization sponsors a special interest group for rural administrators, and a search for "rural" yields timely news and resources about rural education topics.

Formerly known as the REA, the Association traces it's origins back to 1907 when it was originally founded as the Department of Rural Education.
