ERIC Clearinghouse on Rural Education and Small Schools

This site is one of the 16 ERIC clearinghouse sites and is a project of the Appalachia Educational Laboratory (see AEL below). The site contains information on American Indian and Alaska Native education, Mexican American education, migrant education, outdoor education, rural education, and small schools.
Journal for Research in Rural Education

The Journal of Research in Rural Education, established in 1982 by the College of Education and Human Development at the University of Maine, publishes the results of educational research conducted in or relevant to rural settings. Emphasis on articles dealing with learning and instruction; preservice and inservice teacher education; educational leadership; and the social, historical, and economic context of rural education. In 2004 with Volume 19, JRRE converted to an entirely online open-access journal.

National Center for Education Statistics

The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) is the primary Federal agency responsible for the collection, analysis, and reporting of education data. The site is searchable and includes access to the Digest of Education Statistics, The Condition of Education, and Projections of Education Statistics. A "K12 Practitioners Circle" and a "Students' Classroom" streamline the research process for specific users.
National Information Center for Children and Youth with Disabilities

NICHCY is the national information and referral center that provides information on disabilities and disability-related issues for families, educators, and other professionals. Issues include: specific disabilities, early intervention, special education and related services, individualized education programs, family issues, disability organizations, professional associations, and education rights. Their site provides an extensive database of other related organizations, a catalog of publications, and a referral service. Materials and the site are available in Spanish.
National Public School Locator

The National Public School Locator tool enables users to search for student, teacher, and finance information for schools, or to search for schools matching certain characteristics. Useful in checking on number of students in grade configurations, race and ethnicity data, number eligible for free and reduced lunch (a common measure of economic status), and basic school contact information.

If you go to their homepage and click on "Issues," and then on "Education," you'll get to pages where you can learn, for whatever state you select, teacher salaries, per-pupil student spending, statewide gaps in per-pupil spending, and other useful education-related data. In addition, the site includes a roundup of top education stories in the news (updated daily) and great links to other education sites. You can also do queries comparing education-related data for up to four states at a time.

The American Educational Research Association's Rural Education SIG promotes scholarly conversation about the lives of rural people, places and schools through educational research and to provide a forum for dissemination of the findings of this research.
