Funder: Learn and Serve America

Learn and Serve America's School and Community- Based programs provide grants to support efforts to engage students in service-learning. Learn and Serve America funds are used to create new service and service-learning programs; replicate existing models; and train staff, faculty, adult volunteers and students in service-learning. For 2003, grants will support high- quality programs that meet community needs, as defined by states and local communities across the country, in the issue areas of education, public safety, environment, homeland security, and other human needs. Grant: 2003 NREA Mini-Grant Program
Funder: National Rural Education Association
Deadline: May 1, 2003

The National Rural Education Association (NREA) has announced the guidelines for the 2003 NREA Mini-Grant Program. The competition is open to any rural K-12 classroom whose school or community is served by a local Rural Electric Cooperative, or whose students' homes are served by a local Rural Electric Cooperative. There will be 10 mini-grants of $500 each to be expended during the 2003-2004 school year for student-based projects. For more information, go to the NREA website.


Grant: Robert H. Michel Civic Education Grants
Funder: Dirksen Congressional Center
Deadline: May 1, 2003

The Dirksen Congressional Center offers a total of $35,000 in grants for civic-based projects. Eligible projects may include lesson plans, student activities based on civic education web sites, or technology-based projects about congressional history. Grant: 2003 Educator Awards
Funder: P. Buckley Moss Foundation
Deadline: May 1, 2003

The P. Buckley Moss Foundation will award three national educator awards totaling $10,000. The awards honor teachers and their schools for outstanding programs. Teachers must be nominated for this award and may not nominate themselves.

Grant: Inventeams Awards
Funder: Lemelson-MIT Program
Deadline: May 9, 2003

The Lemelson-MIT Program will award 10 grants of up to $10,000. InvenTeams must include high school students, a teacher, and an industry mentor; the teams will invent something of value for their school or community. Only New England schools are eligible for the grants during the 2003-04 pilot program. For more information, visit the InvenTeam website.


Grant: Youth ActionNet
Funder: International Youth Foundation
Deadline: October 1, 2003

A program of the International Youth Foundation, YouthActionNet, provides small grants to youth leaders and their emerging projects that promote social change and connect youth with local communities. Youth-led projects supported by YouthActionNet will have clearly defined goals and have potential for growth or further replication. Award recipients will receive a $500 grant and funds for a disposable camera to photo-document their project for an online photo gallery. Award recipients will also have the opportunity to take part in an online journal and contribute to a booklet of case studies highlighting the work of young people bringing positive change to their communities around the world. The program is open to all young people ages 18 to 24. Both individuals and groups may apply. In 2003, 10 recipients will be selected in each of two rounds of awards.
