  Why Rural Matters in Alabama

Crucial in importance and urgently in need of attention, Alabama ranks second overall among the 50 states. Contributing to these rankings are high rural poverty, low income, and both a high percentage and large numbers of rural people. Relatively large rural schools boost the average number of students per grade, lower the percentage of rural students who attend small schools, and contribute to high transportation spending. Classes are relatively large, and rural classroom computer use is among the lowest in the nation. Teachers are among the most dissatisfied with parental support.

"Alabama, My Home"
The PACERS Small Schools Cooperative brings together old-fashioned civic and community activism with a passion for excellent rural education. The results were honored in "Alabama My Home," a celebration of rural schools and communities that brought hundreds of children, teachers, parents, and activists to the grounds of the state capitol in Montgomery in April.
