  Why Rural Matters in Illinois

Rural people make up only 12% of the population (and 13% of the students), but their sheer numbers (over 1.5 million) make rural education matter in Illinois. The state ranks 3rd worst in the nation in the percentage of rural school expenditures that gets into classrooms. School administrative costs are below the national rural median, but the pay gap between rural teacher salaries and those of other Illinois teachers is second worst in the nation. Overall, conditions are critical.
