Why Rural Matters in Montana
Montana ranks high in the percentage of schools in rural areas (2nd), students in rural schools (6th), people in rural communities (7th) and rural children in poverty (11th), making rural education crucially important. Rural teacher salaries are pitifully low, whether compared to rural teachers elsewhere or to other teachers in Montana. Most rural schools suffer chronic declining enrollment. But a high percentage of rural school spending gets to small classes in small schools, and teachers know parents support them.
