Why Rural Matters in Oregon
Over one-third of Oregon's schools are in rural communities, but they serve only one-fifth of the students, average well under 50 students per grade, and nearly half suffer long term declining enrollment. The percentage of rural school expenditures going to school-level administration is high, as is the proportion that goes to fund transportation. Rural class sizes are small (ranked 8th among states). There is a critical need for policymakers to address rural school issues.
