Why Rural Matters in Utah
Demographically among the most urban states, Utah ranks below the median on every Importance indicator. But it is critical that policymakers pay attention to rural education in Utah, with its low rural per capita income, and relatively high rural child poverty and subsidized lunch eligibility rates. Rural teacher salaries are the 11th lowest in the nation, only one state has larger class sizes, and nearly half of rural schools are steadily losing enrollment.
